Underbite

Hello, this is Dr. Jamali at OMSOFNY. I'm here to answer some of the questions about underbite.

Dr. Jamali, what is an underbite and how does it affect dental and facial structure?

An underbite is when the lower teeth or jaw are in front of the upper jaw, resulting in a strong facial profile with the chin coming forward. Usually, there's a midface deficiency, which means the midface is weak, but the lower lip is forward in relation to the upper lip.

How does an underbite compare to an overbite and how are they treated differently?

Underbites and overbites differ in that an underbite involves the lower jaw coming forward, while an overbite involves the lower jaw being backward. With an underbite, the lower teeth are positioned forward, whereas, with an overbite, the lower teeth are behind the upper teeth. Both conditions are typically addressed through orthodontics.

What causes an underbite and can it worsen over time?

An underbite is usually congenital. Sometimes, a condition called condylar hyperplasia can occur, affecting the growth center of the jaw. This can cause one side of the jaw to grow longer or both sides, creating asymmetry, or the jaw can move forward. This condition is treated surgically and can continue to grow in males up to 27 years of age and in females up to 20 years of age.

What are the risks of leaving an underbite untreated?

There are some risks associated with leaving an underbite untreated, although nothing medically serious. You may experience chewing issues, muscle pain, or speech problems, which are common symptoms.

How can an underbite be corrected and what treatment options are available?

An underbite can be corrected most effectively through surgery if you want a better profile. Orthodontics can correct mild cases.

Can Invisalign fix an underbite or are braces a better option?

Both Invisalign and braces can fix an underbite, but this should be consulted with an orthodontist.

What are the treatment options for mild versus severe underbites?

For severe correction of an underbite, the best solution is a surgical procedure called orthognathic surgery.

How does underbite correction work with braces?

Underbite correction with braces is usually called masking the issue. When the lower teeth are ahead of the upper teeth, the orthodontist brings the lower teeth backward and the upper teeth forward, altering their relationship.

Are there natural ways to fix an underbite without braces or surgery?

Unfortunately, there are no natural ways to fix an underbite without Invisalign, braces, or surgery.

When is underbite surgery necessary and what does the procedure involve?

Underbite surgery is necessary when a patient has a moderate to severe underbite and is not satisfied with their profile or speech. This involves surgery, usually after some time with Invisalign or braces. Once ready, your surgeon can perform the surgery in a hospital setting.

What does underbite jaw surgery before and after results typically look like?

Underbite surgery results in significant improvements. The profile balances out as the lower jaw moves backward and the upper jaw comes forward, providing more support. Depending on the facial angle of the individual, adjustments are made to achieve a decent profile.

How long does it take to fix an underbite with orthodontic treatment?

The time it takes to fix an underbite with orthodontic treatment depends on the periodontal health, age of the patient, and the skills of the orthodontist. For mild cases, it typically takes between six months to two years.
